We were absolutely delighted to be awarded with a Fringe First Award on Friday 22nd August. Out of 480 eligible shows this year only 18 companies received the award which acknowledges outstanding new writing premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe. We are honoured to be among this number.

Other winners that week were Once and For All We're Going to Tell You Who We Are So Shut Up and Listen by by Ontroerend, Goed, Kopergietery and Richard Jordan Productions, Crocosmia by Little Bulb Theatre, The Idiot Colony by Red Cape and In Conflict by Temple Theatre of Philadelphia.

Unfortunately we decided to celebrate the night before the ceremony hence our slightly tired an dishevelled appearance in the above photos.......

Herald review

We got a really good review in the Herald today (all this attention will be going to our heads!)

"the Biggars are straight out of Viz comic by way of Harry Enfield's The Slobs... Slick both by name and by nature this is one show that won't go down the pan."

Slick Review - The Metro

Another great review for SLICK at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, this time from the Metro.

"Jamie Harrison and Candice Edmunds' riotous, scatological, surreal puppet show (and when I say puppets, I mean an amalgamation of actor, puppeteer, prosthetic and costume) is an absolute treat."

Slick Review - The Scotsman

The reviews are starting to pour in for the show now. Check out this 4 star review from the Scotsman:

"Jordan Young's performance as the face of wee Malcolm is beyond praise and the rest of the four-strong cast give him terrific support, in a show whose whole creative team deserve a standing ovation."

Opening Night Approaching!

Vox Motus’ Edinburgh Fringe debut is finally here and our first week is pretty much SOLD OUT!

We unloaded the van at the Traverse yesterday, rigged our lights, set our marks and now we’re ready for an audience. Even though it was a day off for all performances at the Traverse yesterday the bar was still jumping by the time we emerged from our subterranean fit-up. What a great Festival hub!

Things I am most looking forward to:
A much earned drink after Press Night
Meeting up with friends who have travelled from as far a field as Australia to make it to the Fringe
Finally seeing some shows that don’t involve obese puppets
Donning a frock and making the most of the Festival parties

Things I am not looking forward to:
The last train back to Glasgow
Queuing for returns when shows I am desperate to see have sold out
Navigating wet Edinburgh streets in high heels after donning a frock and making the most of the Festival parties

Tech Week madness

Writing a blog entry in the middle of a tech week is madness! In fact, tech weeks in general are madness, especially when you are preparing a show that will open at the Traverse Theatre at Edinburgh Fringe in less than 2 weeks.

Slick is Vox Motus’ first outing a the Fringe, and although we’ve been plotting this since late 2006 the best laid plans of mice, men and puppets all go out the window when you actually consign yourself to a darkened theatre to put actors, sound and lighting together in what you hope will be a show that will make punters ‘ooh’, ‘aah’, laugh, gasp and squirm.

Slick is the story of the grim inhabitants of a desolate tenement who discover they are living above an untapped supply of crude oil. We are using ‘human puppets’ that we have been developing since January 2007. To get a good look at them you just need to pop onto You Tube. The characters include a depressed failed stockbroker and his Botox-injecting wife, a flasher with a fondness for young boys and a 104 year old compulsive liar with the type of medical conditions that would make a hardened medic blush. They all do their best to exploit the hell out of our protagonist – Little Malky Biggar.

At the moment we are busy pulling the world of these crazy characters together in time for their Edinburgh Fringe debut. It involves a lot of coffee, cries of ‘set back!’ and the type of long low whistles a builder might give before whacking you with an outrageous quote for your new skirting. Sometimes we even remember we are supposed to be creating a comedy and laugh.

Have to get back. My allocated time out of the dark hovel is up. The tech continues.

The Final Countdown

It's been manic here at Vox Motus HQ over the last few months as we prepare for the launch of our new show, Slick.

SLICK has been the obsession of Artistic Directors Jamie and Candice since one caffeine fuelled afternoon back in 2006 when they came up with the story of a cat that survives among the bizarre inhabitants of a destitue tenement. The cat has now morphed into a nine year old boy called Malcolm Biggar but the other inhabitants are no less bizarre! The script has been developed along with Stephen Greenhorn (creator of River City and writer for Doctor Who) and is Vox Motus’ first production involving puppetry.

We have developed a concept that marries puppet bodies with human faces creating a world that exists somewhere between cartoons, puppet theatre and a magic show . The result is a gloriously lunatic world that we think people will remember long after they've left the theatre.

We'll have some more information on the genesis of the play over the next few weeks, but here's a rundown of the show tour dates:

Slick tour dates
  • Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh: 12th - 24th August
  • Eden Court Theatre, Inverness: 29th - 30th August
  • Rutherglen Town Hall, Rutherglen: 9th September
  • Byre Theatre, St Andrews: 11th September
  • Palace Theatre, Kilmarnock: 12th September
  • Tron Theatre, Glasgow: 16th - 20th September
  • Lemon Tree, Aberdeen: 23rd - 24th September
  • Macrobert Arts Centre, Stirling: 26th - 27th September
